Bài này nói về câu phủ định, “negative” là phủ định, nó còn mang nghĩa “âm” trong số âm hay nhiệt độ, và mang nghĩa “tiêu cực” nữa . Động từ là negate
A. Trong câu phủ định, not và n’t đứng sau trợ động từ (auxiliary verb), các bạn chú ý trợ động từ là các động từ bổ nghĩa cho động từ chính của câu, chỉ không chỉ là do/does
EG :
We have not received an invitation
The scheme wasn’t working properly
Nếu có nhiều hơn 1 trợ động từ, thì not sẽ đứng sau trợ động từ đầu tiên trong câu :
We shouldn’t have stayed so long
I might not be coming back next term
B. Trong các “thì đơn” (simple tense) chúng ta dùng do làm trợ động từ :
I don’t like cowboy films
The players did not speak to the reporters
C. “Be” là một động từ đặc biệt, nó chả cần do/does – nó cho phép not đứng ngay sau nó
The area is not/isn’t very nice
D. Chúng ta không phủ định 1 câu bằng cách dùng “no” như thế này :
The message no arrived
The message didn’t arrive
E. Not có thể đứng trước 1 từ / cụm từ để mang nghĩa đính chính/ chỉnh sửa ; hoặc thể hiện một nhận định về khoảng cách, về lượng, hay thời gian :
I ordered coffee, not tea
Not many people have their own aircraft
There’s an internet café not far away
We arrived not a moment too soon (= almost too late đó mọi các bạn : Xem tại http://oaadonline.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/dictionary/moment)
=> Chúng tôi đến gần như quá trễ (vẫn còn cứu vãn được chút xíu xìu xiu)
F. Các từ phủ định khác
no : we have no time = we haven’t have any time
none : Tickets? Oh, there are non left = there’ aren’t any left
no one, nobody : I saw no one acting strangely = I didn’t see anyone acting strangely
nothing : I did nothing wrong = I didn’t do anything wrong
nowhere : There was nowhere to park = There wasn’t anywhere to park
few : Few people were interested = Not many people were interested
little : There was little interest = There wasn’t much interest
never : I’ve never seen the film = I haven’t ever seen the film
seldom, rarely : We seldom eat out = We don’t often eat out
no longer : Adam no longer lives here = Adam doesn’t live here any more
hardly, scarcely : I’ve hardly started on my project = I haven’t really started on my project
neither, nor : You can’t sing, neither can I = you can’t sing, and I can’t either
